Vampire fiction by Nancy A. Collins

Nancy Collins has written at least three books on the vampiress Sonja Blue.

This is a highly imaginative series about vampires that also includes seraphims, weres and various other mythical magical races.

I like the tough as nails Sonja Blue but I do not like the fact that all vampires are portrayed as coexisting with a demon inside their bodies and are walking dead.

Sunlight and crosses do not bother her vamps much but they are very closely akin to psi-vampires especially where the older vampires can enter the minds of others or feed from their emotions.

The titles are:

In the Blood in 1992.
Sunglasses After Dark in 1989
Tempter (not read this one)

In April of 1995 they released a book called Midnight Blue, The Sonja Blue Collection.

Miscellaneous books

Roger Zelany's A Night in the Lonesome October is not primarily about a vampire but does have a vampire and all the monsters of the old movies in it.

It is a very funny book that is a sort of who done it and is a comedy as well. I liked it so much I went a bought a copy for myself.

The following is copied from the jacket cover of the book.

During a dark and damp autumn in the late 19 th century, good dog Snuff loyally accompanies a mysterious knife-wielding gentleman named Jack on his midnight rounds through the murky streets of London - collecting the grisly ingredients needed for an unearthly rite that will take place not long after the death of the moon.

But Snuff and his master is not alone. All manner of participants, both human and undead, are gathering from Soho to Whitehall with their ancient tools and their animal familiars, in preparation of the dread night when black magic will summon the Elder Gods back to the world.

Some have come to open the gates...and some to close them. It is brave, devoted Snuff who must calculate the patterns of the Game and keep track of the players- the Witch, the Mad Monk, the Vengeful Vicar, the Count who sleeps by day, the Good Doctor and the hulking Experiment Man he fashioned from body parts...and a wild-card American shapeshifter named Larry Talbot - all the while keeping ogres at bay, and staying a dog-leap ahead of the Great Detective, who knows quite a bit more than he lets on.

Historical Fiction by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro

Yarbro went to a great deal of trouble to research each time period for her books to make them more authentic which makes for excellent reading.

She has two series of books out; One is about the legendary Count St. Saint Germain the alchemist that was believed to have been a vampire.

The other series is about one of his previous mistresses from ancient Rome, the Lady Atta Olivia Clemens.

These books are hard to find but are well worth the effort.

The titles that I know of for these series are:

Blood Games, 1980 to be reprinted in fall of 2002. The Roman noblewoman Atta Olivia Clements appears to have her hearts desire - an absorbing and politically influential husband whose wealth can purchase anything or anyone. Behind this enviable facade lies a hideous world of degradation, madness, and death.

Isolated from all she loves, Olivia's one hope is the mysterious foreigner Sanct' Germain. Will he be her salvation ... or her ultimate damnation?

Crusader's Torch, 1988, book 2 in the Olivia series. It is the year 1189 AD and war is raging all around the Mediterranean. Any woman would fear traveling among the pirates, bandits and renegade Christian knights who flock to the call of battle - but Atta Olivia Clements has a special reason to fear ...

A Flame in Byzantium, 1987, book 1 in the Olivia series. Atta Olivia Clemens had received St. Germain's darkest gift - would his love save her from the True Death?

Path of the Eclipse, 1981. The willow bends and does not break, but the wind that blows from the west has a name ... and that name is Khan - Genghis Khan. It is to the north of ancient China where lies the greatest danger and no one is safe, especially foreigners.

The man known to the Chinese people as Shih Ghieh - Man faces the greatest danger. He is an enigma - a man of strength with no perceivable vices. To survive the coming storm, he allies himself with the beautiful T'en Chih-Yu, a woman warrior desperate to save her people from the Mongol horde.

But the man who offers his help has another, older name - and a terrible secret. For he is the Count St. Germain ... and the greatest gift he can bestow can be bought with blood ... or death.

Hotel Transylvania, 1978, to be reprinted in fall of 2000. House of Eternal Passion - Paris, 1744.

It was the nightmare home of the occult rites of ravishment, where beauty was made to serve evil, and the jaws of horror closed over innocence.

It was the decadent playground of an aristocratic society riddled with rumors about the handsome, charming man any woman would die to love ...

It was here that the irresistible Count Saint Germain and the exquisite Madeleine De Montalia came together. He, doomed to live forever amd always to kill the one he loved, struggling now against the purest passion and most gnawing temptation he had ever known. She, desperately refused to grant her his ultimate act of love, and threatened by a fate that made the kiss of death seem sweet ...

The Palace, 1988, to be reprinted in fall of 2001.

Tempting Fate, 1982.

The Saint-Germain Chronicles, 1983. In his four thousand years, the Count has known royalty and rabble, artists, spies, adulteresses - and the most beautiful women in the world.

From the glittering capitals of 18th century Europe to modern New York, he appears again and again.

Now meet the Count - in an Edwardian sitting room; in a chateau behind enemy lines during World War II; in a Colorado resort where a murderer lurks; on a New York - bound jet, he greets you - a master of the mysterious, a man of peculiar, terrifying desires!

This is a good collection of short stories about the Count.

A Candle for d'Artagnan, 1989, book 3 in the Olivia series. This book takes place during the times of the musketeers and has as many correct historical facts as possible.

Olivia Atta Clemens, immortal vampire, Roman noblewoman, beloved of the Count Saint - German - has come to Paris seeking only peace. But the year is 1637, and there is no peace in the court of Louis XIII, where Cardinal Richelieu maneuvers to control the throne.

Caught up in the intrigue against her will, Olivia seeks and wins the protection of a young guardsman named d'Artagnan - a man destined to become one of the greatest heroes of all time.

Out of the House of Life, 1990, book 1 in the Madeleine series with St-Germain.

Darker Jewels, 1993. The Count is sent by the King of Poland to the court of Russia's Ivan IV, to use his alchemical skills to craft unearthly gems for the mad emperor.

There he finds not only dark intrigue and heart - stopping dangers but a breathtakingly beautiful woman to whom he loses his heart.

Better in the Dark, 1993. Here at last is a long - hinted - at chapter in the undead existence of the immortal Count Saint - Garmain: the story of Ranegonda of Saxony, one of the three great loves of Saint - Germain's life.

937 A.D. The Saxon fortress of Leosan is under the almost unheard - of rule of a woman. The Gerefa of the fortress has become a monk, leaving his sister, Ranegonda, to rule in his name as best as she can - and to deal with his embittered, head - strong wife as well.

Into this tense and dire situation comes Saint - Germain. Shipwrecked on the Baltic Shore, near the true death, he is found by Ranegonda, whom he will come to love for the gift of blood she gives him, and for her own indominitable spirit.
